Not only do I offer free samples, I actually require them for first-time clients interested developmental editing or copy editing. An ideal sample for copy editing is up to 1,000 words taken from somewhere in the middle of the manuscript. For developmental editing, samples vary based on the project but usually consist of the first scene or chapter in the story, depending on length. Once I edit your sample, I’ll send it back to you with a quote for the full project.
Samples are fairly straightforward when it comes to copy editing, but please note that it’s impossible to give an accurate sample regarding the full scope of the work for developmental editing, wherein most of what I’ll do will depend on the context of the full story. Developmental editing samples are only meant to give each of us a better idea of what it would be like to work together.
This depends on how full my schedule is and whether or not you book in advance. My schedule is often filled one to two months out, so while I can’t guarantee quick turnaround times for rush work, I do sometimes have cancellations and gaps in my schedule. Just ask if you need something done quickly; I may or may not be able to accommodate your request.
Otherwise, I encourage you to book a spot on my schedule in advance. With projects booked in advance, my turnaround time is usually one week for shorter novels or novellas, and two to three weeks for longer novels. The exact amount of time will depend on the exact length of the novel and the level of editing required.
Once you’ve contacted me with a sample and we’ve agreed on a price and a date, I’ll send you a contract to sign and an invoice for a deposit of 50% of the total estimated cost of the edit. The paid deposit and signed contract will hold the spot on my schedule. You’ll be able to cancel and receive a full refund of your deposit up to two weeks before our agreed-upon start date.
To start work, I require a payment of 50% of the total estimated cost of the edit. The remainder of the cost will be due 15 days after I deliver the completed edit. I only accept payment through PayPal at this time.
I’ve always been an eclectic reader, and for the most part the same is true for me when I edit. Fantasy, science fiction, romance, horror, young adult, even children’s–I’ve done it all, and I love it all. While this means I’m not an expert in any one genre, I am aware that different genres have different requirements and I am well versed in many different iterations of what makes a good story. I recognize the importance of genre style and tropes when it comes to reader expectations and marketability, and I’ll never push you to tell your romance novel like a thriller, or the other way around.
While I don’t have many hard rules about what genres I work with, if I really don’t connect with the sample a potential client sends me, I’ll turn down that project.
Nope, sorry. It’s important to me to only take on work when I feel I have the knowledge and experience necessary to execute it properly. I can count on one hand the number of memoirs I’ve read in my life, and as such I simply don’t have the expertise needed to edit one well. However, I know a couple of fantastic editors who work with memoirs and I’d be happy to recommend one to you if you ask.
Allison is a brilliant editor. She is exceedingly gifted, and my book will be so much the better for all her help. I’ve used her a lot, but she always manages to astound me with her insights. She understands story structure and characterization so well and has an amazing ability to find creative solutions to story issues. I love that she not only points out things that could be improved, but she also gives excellent suggestions for how the scene could work better or even for adding new scenes completely. She is always encouraging and so pleasant to work with, and she excels both at big-picture edits and proofreading. I highly recommend her!
Allison Wright is professional, quick, and very personable. She’s also a damn good editor capable of editing multiple genres, no matter how odd (I write sci-fi fantasy LitRPG). She has been an absolute pleasure to work with, she cares about your characters as much as you do, and I couldn’t recommend her more!
I was very impressed with the quality of the developmental edit. I received some unbelievably useful suggestions for making the story more cohesive, increasing tension and streamlining the plot. Allison’s plot doctor skills are amazing. I knew the middle of my plot dragged and felt repetitive, but I couldn’t fix it. In a few days, Allison not only understood what I was aiming for, but she identified the elements that let my story down and made suggestions on how to make it pop. I’ll be back for her advice on my next book!
I have worked with Allison for over a year and a half now, and I credit her with massively improving my ability to write. She not only edited my work, but has also acted as a sounding board and a writing coach to me over the time we’ve worked together. I will continue to use her services, and recommend her to anyone else looking to have their stories professionally edited!
Allison gives very thoughtful and encouraging feedback. Her insight has helped me to better develop both the themes and characters in my novels, and her attention to detail delivers a polished manuscript. She is friendly and professional, and seems to truly care about her clients and their work. I’m very happy to have found her!
Allison has such a great eye for detail and managed to go through my 85,000-word manuscript and pick up inconsistencies and errors (big and small) that I had missed. It gave me such peace of mind that she was going through my manuscript with a fine-toothed comb and helping me make my writing the best that it could be! I can’t recommend her highly enough.
Allison is a fantastic content editor. I was having a very hard time deciding a path forward in a few areas of my story and she offered some wonderful ideas that got my creative juices flowing again. In addition, she went through the story line by line, commenting in-depth on every little detail. Her advice to change this, omit that and move this paragraph to a more appropriate place helps to make the whole story flow seamlessly and also to make better sense. I am very glad I came across someone who diligently puts so much thought into someone else’s work. I highly recommend Allison and will definitely reach out to her again.
